Artist's Bio

Doug Meaney (b.1949) is primarily a macro photographer living in small town Ontario, Canada. He focuses on both botanicals and purely abstract themes. He is self-taught but owes a huge debt to the many talented and generous artists who share their knowledge both personally and online.

Doug’s artistic journey began in 2006 with an introductory painting course run by a friend. At the time it was a way to spend some cold winter evenings, but it lit a spark. Over the years, he's experimented with various materials and techniques. Years later, thanks to a photographer friend, he stumbled into the world of macro photography. Thanks David G! What had been a spark became a flame.

In his abstract work, his interests lie primarily with the properties of light as distinct from strictly illumination. Properties like refraction, interference and polarization for example. He uses a variety of light sources and materials to attempt to capture the transient and ephemeral images that result.

Doug has participated in, and been recognized for, some of his photographs in juried online gallery shows and local art venues. He also belongs to many local art and photography clubs and submits work to online art forums.

A quick note on AI

None of the images you see here have been generated or enhanced by AI. They are all "out of camera" with some post-production editing, but that's it. I have no moral or artistic objection to AI but I prefer not to use it..for now. Should I decide to incorporate it in any of my photos, I will say so, clearly and unequivically. Full disclosure and transparency are important!

It’s a Small World After All

I also enjoy being part of art groups where people support and inspire each other. I'm happy to be a member of Spirit of the Hills Arts Association and Arts Quinte West. These groups help me grow as an artist and let me connect with other creative people.
